What's Meetup?

Maybe it's time for a little less face-to-screen and a little more face-to-face.

What's a Meetup Group?

Meetup Groups are today's support groups, parent playgroups, citizen groups, fitness groups, book clubs, professional groups, and other powerful local groups!

Cosmology is the study of the structure, contents, and evolution of the universe as a whole. This talk will explore the basics of cosmology, including what we know about the early universe, the evidence for dark matter, the formation of structure and, ultimately, the formation galaxies like the Milky Way. Prof. Elizabeth Barton will also describe the evidence for the new, mysterious "dark energy" that appears to be accelerating the expansion of the universe.

This promises to be exciting. If you're riveted by Cosmology -- which is the scientific tudy of the structure and evolution of the Universe -- then you'll want to catch the latest results.

WINE AND DINNER: Come join us at 7PM, one hour before the talk, for wine and dinner with the chapter members.

Menu:
Beef Tri-Tip with Complimentary Wine

The Orange County Chapter of Sigma Xi is composed of over 200 scientists and engineers. The chapter is updated at meetings on science topics by local science and engineering experts. These presentations are often on the cutting edge of science or sometimes they offer a fascinating historical retrospective of some branch of science. In the past, our usual audience of some 35-50 members and invited guests have listened to outstanding speakers from such noted universities as Caltech, UCLA, USC and UCI and such research institutions as JPL and Scripps on every science subject from astrophysics to zoology.

Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, has had a distinguished history of service to science and society for over a century. Its primary publication, The American Scientist, is generally recognized as one of the nation's premier scientific journals for nonspecialists.

    •  The event was great, professor Barton made a really good presentation with a great overview of the field from then to now. The only drwaback was that time was too limited to really get in to the details of the current cosmological hypotheses and why they are interesting and not just advanced fantasies. You seem to have some more knowledge about this and also indicated that there are imperical evidence -- maybe we could arrange a discussion group of interested people to weed out what is real and to increase our understanding. This group, however, need to be small enough to allow for elaborate discussions! In the meantime, could you, please, give me some pointers for me to follow on my own? Papers, Web sites, book?
    •  It was very nice to once again chat with members of Science Cafe and other members of the public who came there to join us. And Professor Barton's talk was enlightening.

The science of Cosmology is fascinating and the talk was filled with very understandable information. I can hardly wait until 2013 when the larger telescopes will be viewing things we still haven't seen or known about. After attending this meeting, the following night I attended a talk given by Dr. Robert Ballard and learned so many things about life under the sea. So needless to say I have had an all encompassing two nights of out of this world and below the sea experiences that inspire me to read more about both areas. It is all very very exciting, this adventure/journey I am on.
