Meetup Groups meet face-to-face to pursue hobbies, network, get support, make friends, find playgroups or even change the world.
Get on the Internet to get off the Internet!
You'll get invited to our Meetups as soon as they're scheduled!
WHEN:
June 23rd 2007, 3:00 pm
WHERE:
Fort Greene rooftop & Habana Outpost
Brooklyn, NY
WHAT:
John Howe, a Brooklyn beekeeper will be giving us a tour of his rooftop facilities. During our visit, we'll:
--See the hives in action
--Learn more about bees and the benefits of urban beekeeping
--Take a peek at honey-making equipment, and hopefully, a little tasting
--Find out more about "colony collapse disorder" the epidemic that has pushed wild, unmanaged bee populations to the brink of extinction
In addition to bottling and selling honey, John also makes wax candles, lipbalm, and soaps. If John has any wares available, and you are interested in purchasing, bring along a little extra cash.
We'll follow up our beekeeping tour, with a three-block trek to the Habana Outpost, a small eco-friendly restaurant/pub that serves Cuban food and great mojitos (plus beer etc.). I'll bring along handouts about the North American honeybee and its taxonomy, so we have something to mull over while we munch plaintain chips.
SUGGESTED ITEMS TO BRING:
--Camera
--Sunscreen and/or hat
--Cash for any purchases and restaurant
--Feel free to bring partner, spouse, or friends; add guest on the rsvp
--Your appetite and good humor; food outing to follow event
QUICK PRECAUTIONS:
--Don't wear perfume or cologne for this event
--If you know you are allergic to bees or wasps, bring proper meds (the chances of anyone being stung are very, very low, but let's be prepared--don't want anyone going into anaphylactic shock...)

(At the moment, I'm funding the Meetup site. If you want to donate to this Meetup group, that would be awesome, but not necessary. A 2--5 dollar donation is suggested. And if you can't manage this time, then perhaps later. These things usually come out in the wash.)
